Carpet Fibers and Styles

WOOL

Natural fiber from sheep. The type is determined by the breed of sheep and the climate. Most fabrics use long and short wool fibers interlocked together.

Characteristics: good resilience, good resistance to abrasion, good texture retention, good resistance to soil, and good cleanability.

NYLON

The first synthetic fiber made into carpet in the 1940's. It is synonymous with strength and abrasion resistance.

OLEFIN (POLYPROPYLENE)

Produced in 1965. Virtually non-absorbant (hydrophobic), so solution dyeing is the only way to color the fiber. It's often air entangled with nylon to add flecks of color.

Characteristics: Good resistence to abrasion, very good resistance and cleanability, adequate resilience and texture retention.

POLYESTER

Soft, luxurious appearance close to that of wool, as well as its bright lustrous shades.

Characteristics: Good resistance to abrasion, very good resilience and texture retention when adequately twisted and heat set, and adequate cleanability. Naturally stain resistance.

The Perfect Style for you....

Saxony - A cut pile carpet with the surface yarns that are even across the face. Often referred to as a "plush" carpet. An elegant formal look.

Textured Saxony - A cut pile with an irregular surface appearance (sheen like) made possible by an increased yarn twist. Minimizes footprints and always ideal for an informal atmosphere.

Sculptured - A design in a carpet created by having yarns of various lengths tufted into the backing to create a tracery appearance for a traditional look. Also referred as a cut and loop.

Frieze - Yarns that have been tightly twisted to give a rough, nubby appearance to the carpet. Highly durable and long wearing.

Loop Pile - A carpet manufactured with even loops (level loop) tightly connected and held together by the carpet backing. Informal and versatile.

Berber - Loop pile carpet available in a variety of loop sizes in a solid color yarn or blended with multi colored yarns to create a subtle effect. Contemporary atmosphere yet stylish.

Tone on Tone - A textured carpeting containing yarn in at least two different shades of the same color to create a shadowy pattern. Distinctively elegant.

Multi-Color - A textured carpeting containing a multitude of different colored yarns tufted together to create a contemporary look.
